  4. The F-105 entered the Vietnam War in August of 1964.  By 1965,
  5. the F-105 was in the forefront of the first air offensive against
  6. North Vietnam, Operation Rolling Thunder.  This was a stupid,
  7. wasteful campaign, especially for the large Thud formations.  The
  8. F-105s carried small bomb loads (seven 750-pounders), which they
  9. dropped on targets of dubious value. The principal benefit of
  10. Rolling Thunder was to the Russians and Chinese; they both used
  11. the offensive to develop an intensive antiaircraft defense system
  12. for North Vietnam.

  14. In Operation Rolling Thunder, the F-105 suffered greatly.  F-105
  15. missions into the North were dangerous, often more than three
  16. hours long and involved two or more inflight refuelings.  In the
  17. process, the Thud pilots had to evade MiG attacks, fight their
  18. way through flak, put their bombs on target, and then fight their
  19. way out.  Washington's policy of a "graduated response" allowed
  20. the enemy to prepare extensive antiaircraft defenses.
